Student Advisory Board

The Center's Student Advisory Board (SAB) is a group of highly qualified, creative students committed to human rights advocacy. The SAB provides students interested in and committed to human rights the opportunity to participate in the planning and implementation of Center programming, to learn tangible skills beyond the classroom for effective advocacy and activism, and to attend special SAB-only events and receptions.

Article I: Name and Mission

  • Name: Student Advisory Board (SAB) for the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (CHRHL).
  • Mission: To advise the CHRHL on student engagement, promote education for human rights and international Humanitarian Law, and foster collaboration between students, faculty, and practitioners.

Article II: Objectives

  • Advise the Director of CHRHL on student needs and priorities related to Center events.
  • Enhance interdisciplinary dialogue on human rights & international humanitarian law.
  • Support CHRHL initiatives through event planning and outreach.
  • Serve as a liaison between students and the CHRHL.

Article III: Membership

The Board shall be comprised of five students from diverse academic programs.

  • Eligibility: Open to all students committed to human rights; no discrimination permitted.
    • Demonstrated interest in international law
    • Commitment to carrying obligations of a board member
  • Selection: Board members will be chosen during the annual spring application process after submitting a resume and written statement.
    • Late March.
    • Selection should be done by sitting board members by a simple majority.
    • In extraordinary circumstances, CHRHL Director may reject any selection by board members. In which case, the board members shall decide on a substitute.
  • Term: One academic year, renewable once upon approval of the CHRHL Director.
    • Term begins within two weeks of final board announcement through two weeks following the announcement of the new board.
    • A transitional meeting shall be held between the incoming and outgoing board members within the two-week period mentioned above.
  • Removal: Members may be removed for unexcused absences for 2 meetings or misconduct pursuant to the Honor Code by a unanimous vote of all board members.

Article IV: Obligation of the board members

  • Attend all meetings of the board, unless excused for good cause.
  • Attend at least two events per semester hosted by CHRHL.
  • Board members are expected to follow the Honor Code.
  • Represents the Student Advisory Board of the CHRHL.

Article V: Leadership Roles

  • Chairperson: Leads meetings, sets agendas, represents SAB in communications with CHRHL Director.
  • Vice-Chair: Manages records, minutes, and communications, assumes duties of Chairperson if they are unable to perform their duties. Responsible for sending notes to Director within 24 hours of meeting conclusion.

Elections of the leadership roles shall be held annually at the beginning of each term. Nominations and simple majority vote required.

Article VI: Meetings

  • Frequency:
    • Monthly board meetings throughout the academic year. Send notes and opinion to CHRHL Director.
    • Biannual meetings with the CHRHL Director to align priorities.
  • The Chairperson will schedule the time with their board members.
  • Board members may notify the Chairperson in writing in cases of absence with good cause. Absence without notification in writing is considered to be unexcused.
  • Decision-Making: Majority vote; Chairperson holds tie-breaking authority.

Article VII: Amendments

  • Proposed amendments to this Constitution require a unanimous vote of the entire board and pending approval by the CHRHL Director.

Article VIII: Ratification

  • Effective upon unanimous approval by all SAB members and CHRHL Director.
